Top Tips On Using Traditional Treatments Such As Olive Oil For Vaginal Thrush

By Jocelyn Higgins

Most women experience thrush at one time or other, some have recurrent bouts. The infection is yeast related and is due to an increase in a type of fungus that is naturally located in the vulva area. The symptoms of this infection include itching and soreness, swelling and a white discharge. Whilst treatments can be purchased to treat this infection they can be quite expensive and sometimes lead to side effects. An effective alternative treatment is to use home remedies to clear the infection. Many people find, for example, that using olive oil for vaginal thrush brings about very quick and effective results.

It is generally recommended that women should consult a doctor when experiencing a yeast infection for the first time so that a proper diagnosis can be made. The vast majority of yeast infections are caused by a type of fungus known as Candida Albicans. It is reported that around fifty per cent of women have Candida naturally present without it causing any symptoms.

Yeast infections are thought to be caused by a change in the natural conditions of the vagina. This altering of conditions can lead to an explosion in the growth of Candida that causes the symptoms of this condition. Reasons for the change could be chemical related, taking antibiotics sometimes affects conditions. Alternatively it might be caused by hormonal changes in the body, perhaps as a result of pregnancy or the menopause.

There are many alternative home therapies that can successfully treat a yeast infection. Olive oils contain important anti fungal properties which are thought to fight the infection by cutting off oxygen supplies to the yeast. Women often combine these oils with tea tree essential oil which is known for its anti fungal and antibacterial properties.

Combining these two home remedies helps to dilute the tea tree oils which tend to be quite strong. Many women choose to apply olive oils around the area to help soothe the irritation of this yeast infection. Tampons can also be soaked in these oils before adding a few drops of tea tree to the tampon and inserting in the vagina. Alternatively a mixture of these two ingredients can be applied to the area twice a day.

Another often recommended treatment is putting a piece of garlic into the vagina and keeping it there for three or four hours. Garlic has been used for centuries to help clear up yeast infections and can be extremely effective. Cloves can be immersed in extra virgin oils before being used as garlic is quite a strong ingredient.

Many women choose to make use of home therapies to treat and clear the symptoms of a yeast infection. These easily found ingredients are unlikely to cause side effects. Home treatments like using olive oil for vaginal thrush can be carried out quickly and avoid the unnecessary costs of a visit to the pharmacy.
