There was a time when it was fashionable to smoke. Many old movies and television series show the heroes and heroines puffing away in a sophisticated manner. Cigarette adverts portrayed the habit as glamorous. People smoked everywhere, in cinemas, shops, offices and, well, anywhere they chose to smoke. Cigarettes even formed part of the basic ration packs supplied to soldiers. The utter distaste of those that abhorred the habit were simply ignored.

It took anti smoking groups many years but in the end they prevailed. Using tobacco products became unfashionable and legislation was passed in many countries, aiming to prohibit the laces where people were allowed to smoke. Manufacturers were severely restricted regarding the advertising of their products and tobacco products were subjected to very high taxes. Exhaustive educational programs helped to inform consumers about the danger of these products.

The facts about the harmful effects of nicotine and other substances, such as tar, found in tobacco products simply cannot be disputed. They cause heart disease, many different types of lung diseases, they affect the normal function of the liver, kidneys and the spleen and they are deadly to yet unborn babies. Smokers die younger than non smokers. Even worse, secondary smoke causes almost as much harm.

Most smokers will admit that they are fully aware of the dangers they expose themselves to. They will also admit that society has changed and that the habit is seen as filthy, smelly and anti social. They will even admit that their habit is expensive. Many of these smokers say that they still smoke only because the cannot quit. Quitting is indeed difficult, because nicotine is so very addictive, but many thousands of smokers stopped successfully.

There is no shortage of help for those that want to quit. There are many over the counter products, such as chewing gum and patches that are designed to reduce the urge to light up a cigarette. Many organizations offer special programs to help smokers. There are even substitutes and electronic cigarettes have become very popular because they still offer the illusion of dragging on a cigarette.

As with all addictions, no method or technique will work unless the addicted person admits that he has a problem and expresses the desire for assistance. Only then can positive action be taken. It may be advisable to see a general practitioner before embarking upon any specific program to quit the habit. Once a program or course of action has been decided upon, it is vital that such a person is supported and encouraged by his friends and family.

Smoking is not glamorous. It causes early ageing, it numbs the taste buds and smokers cannot smell as well as non smokers. The habit is extremely dangerous to the health of the smoker and those around him. Quitting is not always easy, but the human mind can overcome amazing obstacles.
