Investigating Effective Alternative Lyme Therapies

By Sarah Harris

Lyme disease is now found in every continental American state as well as around the world. This debilitating disease was unknown until the late twentieth century, although researchers believe it has been around but unrecognized. It is a tick-borne illness that can change your life for the worse. Since existing medical tests and treatment have proved to be flawed, many people turn to alternative Lyme therapies for relief.

If tests show that a person has Lyme, (the tests often show a false negative), doctors prescribe antibiotics. As even doctors realize, antibiotics destroy the beneficial bacteria in the intestines which are essential for proper digestion, elimination, and immunity. Therefore, a good probiotic supplement is necessary to restore the flora; this may take months of supplementation.

For those who have joint pain, fatigue, mental confusion, and other results of Lyme, herbal treatments have proved very helpful. The pathogen that causes Lyme is a spirocete, not easily treated with antibiotics anyway. Spirocetes can burrow into tissues and organs, where they go dormant and emerge when the body's defenses are weak.

Herbs have been shown to be both safe and effective by centuries of use and by recent clinical tests. Of course, they must be used properly. Even water can be toxic if taken in excessive amounts. One herb used to treat Lyme's symptoms is Samento, a special preparation of cat's claw in which some components have been inactivated. Many use Samento alone, without antibiotics, if they are bitten by a tick; millions feel that they have averted or cured the disease in this way.

Another herb - and one that may grow locally - is teasel. This herb can be harvested off the side of the road in most east coast states. However, roadside plants can contain heavy metals, so it is better to get your teasel roots from a field far from traffic. Gather the roots, soak them in vodka for six weeks, and drain off the liquid. Then use as directed by your health professional. You can also find directions for using the herb on the internet.

Be aware that advice on the internet can be bad as well as good. Check for several reputable sources that agree before accepting advice on the use of herbs. Herbs are merely vitamin and mineral rich plants, some of which have specific therapeutic effects while others are generally nutritive. Think of parsley, which you eat with confidence. It is nutritionally dense, and it is also an strong diuretic.

There are many immunity boosting products on the market, which help your body defend itself against this and other pathogens. One that has especially proved effective for this illness is monolaurin, a derivative of coconut oil. There are many sites online devoted to helping people recover from this debilitating disease which offer suggestions for rebuilding health.

Above all, do not ignore your body's signals of distress. You might be able to put up with stiff joints and fatigue, but research has shown that Alzheimer's and dementia can result from letting this illness go untreated. Some link all degenerative conditions, like Parkinson's, MD, and MS, to this disease, which can also be spread by fleas and mosquitoes.
