Basics Relating To Breast Implants Merrillville Indiana Clients Should Know

By Dorothy Sullivan

Breast augmentation surgery (also known as mammoplasty) is a common cosmetic operation. It is mainly used to alter the size or the shape of breasts. More recently it, is increasingly being used to effect sex change. The operation itself involves placement of prostheses within the breast tissue. There are a number of important facts on breast implants merrillville indiana clients need to know if they plan to have this procedure.

Prostheses are of two main types. The first is the silicone implant so named because of the silicone gel that it contains. The outer shell is made of rubber. This type is more preferred because it has a more naturally feel. Its main disadvantage is the fact that it is less malleable. The saline type contains saline within a rubber shell. It is more malleable hence can be inserted through smaller surgical incisions.

There are different sites in which the implant can be placed. The common ones include an area under the breast, around the nipple or under the arm (axillary region). For the insertion to take place a small incision (surgical cut) is made and the glandular tissue separated from the underlying muscle to create a pocket. A saline implant is usually inserted when empty and filled later while a silicone implant is pre-filled with gel.

The surgery can be done in an inpatient or outpatient facility. General anesthesia is commonly used with local anesthesia being reserved for selected cases. The appropriate incision is made, the implant placed in position and stitching done. The entire exercise typically takes between 60 and 90 minutes. As soon as the anesthesia wears off, you can be released to go home (usually the same day).

When undergoing this procedure, there are a number of possible complications that one should anticipate. The short term complications include bleeding, nerve injury and infections. Long term complications include scarring, rupture of prostheses, leakage of silicone gel and changes to nipple sensation among others. Take time to discuss these complications with your doctor so that your risk can be assessed.

Bear in mind that the results of augmentation are not the same for all patients. While some are happy with what they look like after the procedure, others are unsatisfied and may even demand a repeat. The differences that are seen are attributable to factors such as type of implant used, the technique employed and the nature of the initial problem. You need to adjust your expectations based on your condition.

As you leave the facility, your wounds will be dressed and you may also have drains inserted. These drains facilitate the flow of excess tissue fluid. They are removed as soon as they have served their purpose which is usually within a few days. You may notice swelling and pain but these will resolve spontaneously over time. Over the counter pain relievers can be used to provide relief.

As part of the preparation, there are a number of things that one should do. There is a need to discuss with the surgeon about the available options. This includes the size, shape and type of implant (whether silicon or saline). Smokers need to stop smoking two months in advance to facilitate wound healing. Blood thinners and aspirin should be stopped as well.
