Peripheral nerves are nerves found outside of your spinal column, and damage to them is referred to by medical authorities as neuropathy. Improperly managed diabetes. Medical experts confirm that up to half of all the people suffering from diabetes have nerve damage in their extremities. This is due to having high sugar levels in the blood constantly, which can be damaging to the nerves. The fact is doctors say that it's one of the most usual diabetes complications.

Too much intake of alcohol. Everybody is well aware that consuming lots of alcohol is something that can cause havoc to the liver. Not too many people, however, know that it can also cause nerve problems in the long run. Experts say that it's for the fact that alcohol causes toxins to be introduced into the body. What's more, it can trigger nutritional deficiencies, some types of which can have a negative effect on the nerve's proper functioning.

Some forms of autoimmune diseases. Doctors explain that an autoimmune disease entails the immune system attacking not only bacteria and viruses, but perfectly harmless tissues as well. Some examples of such are lupus, rheumatoid arthritis and Guillain Barre syndrome. It is confirmed by health authorities that some of those tissues that the immune system may attack include the peripheral nerves.

Physical injuries. Some traumas such as those that result from vehicular accidents or sports mishaps can cause pressure or damage to the nerves situated in the extremities. Even seemingly harmless everyday activities can actually lead to nerve damage, and they include constantly typing on a computer keyboard or tapping on the screen of a smart phone.

Tumor growth. It's possible for tumors to show up in various areas of your body, health authorities confirm. At times they may appear right next to a peripheral nerve or on the nerve itself. If this happens to you, it's not unlikely for you to report to your doctor that the extremity where the tumor is found tends to feel numb or achy.

Intake of some types of drugs. It's common knowledge that most medications can cause unfavorable side effects, and some of those include damage to the nerves. The medication administered to someone who has cancer and is undergoing chemo is notorious for such. Individuals who are prescribed with certain types of drugs for heart disease or high blood pressure may also experience pain, numbness and sometimes tingling in their feet, legs, hands and arms.

Some forms of infections. According to doctors, peripheral neuropathy may also be caused by certain infections. This is true most especially if the involved bacteria or viruses are known to harm the nerves. A few examples of infections that can result in nerve related problems include shingles, lyme disease, hepatitis C, leprosy and HIV.
