Some Facts Concerning Total Laser Resurfacing

By Scott Walker

As we age, our skins tend to become thinner and reveal scars, wrinkles and superficial lines. The same effect may be seen with prolonged exposure to sunlight. Total laser resurfacing is one of the options available in Cincinnati, OH used to reduce the appearance of these conditions. Some of the reasons as to why it is greatly preferred over other modalities include its ability to give results more rapidly, the fact that it has less side effects and that it is associated with less pain.

Superficial lines and wrinkles are caused by aging and damaged collagen tissue. This tissue is found in the dermis layer and is important in providing structural integrity. When this tissue is subjected to a laser beam, it gets damaged further which gives rise to newer tissues. This happens over weeks to months. The old and wrinkled skin is progressively renewed to smoother more youthful skin.

There is no strict criteria that is used to choose candidates to undergo the treatment. Anyone who desires a more youthful appearance of their skin is a potential candidate. There are several medications that should be stopped for some time before the exercise. These include aspirin, vitamin E and blood thinners. All these drugs and supplements increase the chance of bleeding. Smoking delays recovery and should be stopped for some time as well.

The resurfacing procedure is usually done in the office and there is usually no need for admission. There is not much in terms of preparation that needs to be done. Since there may be a bit of discomfort or pain, topical anesthesia or light sedation may be administered. The whole exercise lasts for a period of 30 minutes to one hour depending on the area of skin to be treated.

The number of sessions that are required to yield results is dependent on the magnitude of the problem. For the majority of people, a single session is adequate. If there is a need for additional sessions, these can be done at intervals of six weeks. The six weeks break gives a chance to the collagen to regenerate before subsequent treatments are given.

The time needed for recovery varies from person to person. It is greatly dependent on how deep the peel is. For the average individual, between three and seven days are required. You may experience a sunburn sensation or itchiness but this tends to resolve with time. Persons with a light tone may have residual pink or red patches that are replaced with normal skin color with time.

Dressings are not necessary as you begin to recover. However, some recovery products be of benefit. Hyper emollient creams, sun blocks and antibiotics may have to be used for a couple of days. Make-up may be needed to mask the red discoloration until the tone normalizes. Among dark skinned persons, skin pigments may be seen. This can be taken care of by using a small amount of a bleaching agent.

Laser resurfacing continues to increase in popularity by the day. What is important to remember is that people will have different results even when the procedure is performed by the same specialist. It is important that one adjusts their expectations based on the magnitude of their initial problem.
